DENTAL ONCOLOGY:

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a well-known but uncommon side effect of radiation therapy (RT) for head and neck cancer related to high dose and risk of future dental extractions. Dr. Kase will discuss how to assess patients who would benefit most from contemporary treatment modalities in head and neck radiation. He will also discuss how to appropriately treat patients post-radiation. Dr. Kase will also discuss contemporary topics relating to osteonecrosis of the jaw and newer medications which pose a risk to patients.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

-Learn and determine safe doses of radiation with regards to treatment options, such as extractions vs implants vs root banking.

-Learn and be knowledgeable of contemporary treatment modalities of radiation.

-Learn and be aware of new and old classes and names of drugs with the likely risk of MRONJ.

-Learn and define the difference between MRONJ and ORN.
